We exfoliate our skin and our lips: why should our scalp be any different? Product buildup, dandruff, dead skin cells, and the weather can all contribute to your scalp deserving of a makeover. Rubbing the scalp can unclog pores and promote healthy future growth. Keep your hair shiny as ever and within your budget with our favorite homemade scalp scrubs.

1. Aloe vera scrub

2 tablespoons of aloe vera + 1 tablespoon of sugar

Aloe is always a lifesaver in terms of hydration during exfoliation. Grains of sugar (unrefined brown is best for all recipes) act as an exfoliant. This recipe is also great for adding volume to fine hair or treating an itchy scalp. Apply to damp scalp after mixing well, massaging and rinsing.

2. Coffee scrub

1/4 cup of used ground coffee + 2 tablespoons of olive oil

After making your morning cup of Joe, save the ground coffee and mix well with olive oil. This will make your hair grow faster and the caffeine will actually invigorate your scalp similar to how mint does. Rub gently and rinse, then with shampoo.

3. Coconut scrub

1 tablespoon coconut oil + 1 tablespoon baking soda

Blend this mixture, which acts as a clarifying scrub, into your scalp until it feels slippery. Don’t add baking soda if you feel like you have sensitive skin, but at the same time, using just coconut oil can add a slight greasy film after washing, so maybe try this scrub at night. Then shampoo.

4. Himalayan Sea Salt Scrub

1/2 cup Himalayan pink salt – 1/4 cup warm coconut oil, 10 drops essential oil of your choice

Mix this until it becomes a spreadable paste. Add an essential oil if you wish. Let this mixture soak for 30 minutes before applying it to your hair. Pink salt removes dead skin and dandruff easily and at the same time facilitates hair growth. It also allows other ingredients to penetrate more.

5. Cinnamon scrub

1.4 teaspoons cinnamon – 1 teaspoon baking soda – 1 tablespoon olive oil

If you’re looking for a scalp detox, what you’ve been missing is a cinnamon scrub. We all need this tingling treatment at least once a month to remove impurities from our scalp. Again, if you suffer from skin sensitivity, swap out the baking soda for something more soothing.

No matter the season, we all have dirt build up on our scalps.
