Austria Travel Guide

Nestled between the Alps, Austria is an incredible country to visit, boasting a spectacular variety of landscapes, settings, and views. In addition to its sophisticated capital, Vienna, there is the picturesque city of Salzburg to explore, while charming cities and towns are dotted here and there amidst its lakes, valleys and mountains.

Situated right in the heart of Central Europe, it is surrounded clockwise by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany. Highly mountainous for the most part, its landlocked landmass is littered with alpine lakes and sweeping valleys, while rolling hills and picturesque farmland cover about a quarter of its territory.

Packed with grand buildings, stunning historical sights, and opulent opera houses, Vienna is one of Europe’s most elegant and attractive capitals. Located along the banks of the Danube, it serves as the economic, cultural and political center of the German-speaking country with millions of visitors each year to explore its imperial past, listen to operas and wander through its many magnificent museums.

The other main city of interest is Salzburg, which is also known for its rich music scene, outstanding architecture, and stunning alpine backdrop. While the larger cities of Linz, Graz, and Innsbruck also attract many with their historic churches, museums, and monuments, the fairytale city of Hallstatt, with its beautiful lakeside setting, is probably the most popular of all. .

Because of all its majestic mountains, Austria has long been known as a winter sports destination with its resorts teeming with skiers and snowboarders in the cold winter months. However, summer lends itself perfectly to hiking and mountain biking, while magnificent swimming can be enjoyed in its myriad of attractive lakes such as Achensee, Wolfgangsee and Lake Constance.
