A useful capsule wardrobe reflects your own week, not somebody else’s perfect checklist.
Audit what already works
Pull out the pieces you reach for every week. Notice their cuts, colours and fabrics. The aim is not a strict item count; it is a wardrobe where most pieces work together and suit your real schedule.
Pick a practical base
Choose two or three neutral colours and one or two accents. A comfortable trouser, versatile shirt, layer and shoes can create many outfits if their proportions work together. Try combinations before buying anything new.
Prioritise fit over labels
Check how a garment feels when you sit, walk and move your arms. Compare measurements with the retailer’s size chart, because sizing varies across cuts. Consider care instructions as well: a piece that needs more maintenance than you can give it will not earn its place.
Fill only the gaps
Make a short list of missing pieces and shop from that list. M&S has a capsule-wardrobe guide for inspiration, but use it as a starting point rather than a universal formula. Revisit your choices after a few weeks of actual wear.
